Why self needs direct deposit:

Got a paycheck in my wallet. That's always a good thing.

In fact.. I have three paychecks in my wallet.

(Sorry, Mr. Employer. Hope your accounting was up-to-date!)

I wonder what kind of late fees I've incurred this time?

Now, how many times will it be....
I know you've forgotten to cash checks before... Are you starting some trend here - working for free, to further humanity? If so, let me know, cuz that's the future according to Star Trek, and if you are the one that starts it, I want in...

We didn't start the fire...
Working for free to further humanity...

It's called "Community Service" or "Volunteering" - I do a lot of that, but I'm hardly a pioneer.

Finally... (I tried posting a reply right after you posted, but I would just get a 404... bastards)...

Anyway, no. It is different. Volunteers do work that is not paid. Hence, you are volunteering. However, you are doing work that is paid, you receive a paycheck, and yet you are not cashing it. Different. As a volunteer for work that is specifically 'volunteer', do you receive a paycheck? Probably not.

You're quite mistaken.
Work needs doing. If there are no volunteers, someone gets paid.

If you're judging motivation, you have to categorize by motivation.
  • Internship
Work performed with less or no payment, to further one's career.
Worker: delayed gratification, but ultimately driven by money.
Employer: taking advantage of their position to recieve discounted labor.

  • Employment
    Work performed for a fee.
    Worker: fulfils immediate material needs.
Employer: profits more from this labor than what it cost.

  • Volunteer
Work performed because it needs doing, with no thought towards compensation.
    Worker: emotional gratification is immediate.
Employer: gets more accomplished than they could alone.
Whether you're in it to make a profit, or just want to contribute back to the community, it's the same time and energy spent.

It's the same work, here or in Star Trek.
