This question comes up every once in a while, and I can never remember the answer, so it drives me crazy until I get a chance to research it, only to find that I actually knew all along. So, I figured I'd post the darn thing here so I can file it under "memories" and hopefully break out of this frustrating cycle.

*deep breath*
The in-ride music you hear on Space Mountain (Disneyland California, anyway) is a loose adaptation of Aquarium from Saint-Saen's Carnival of the Animals, as performed by legendary surf guitarist Dick Dale (of the Deltones).
...in case it sounded familiar.

hit or miss
There's apparently a small red light in the bottom-left corner on the back of each rocket. If it's blinking or solid, that indicates the music is going to work. If the light's off, that one won't have any music.

I don't know if you'd have better luck waiting for the next car, or if this is the status of every car at that particular moment, but there you go.

Personally, I appreciate the variety. The music's great, but you find yourself humming along, anticipating every turn. Turn off the music, and the ride's suddenly more dramatic.

...and, no. The video for We Belong to the Sea is trippy. More so than even Bumble Bee...

Mostly miss for me...
I think I've ridden Space Mountain twice in my life with the music running. It's nowhere near the point of anticipating the turns with the music. I wouldn't mind having the opportunity to get to that point...

I miss it too. Haven't been there in years...
Check with technomonky - I'm sure he's got the track on CD. My guess is if you listen to it a few times, you'll know exactly where every major event takes place before you even go on the ride.

Of course, that's really bad advice and you shouldn't actually do it. Just enjoy the ride on the level it was intended - why destroy the experience by memorizing it's built-in spoilers?

A side note, though:
Towards the end of the day, synchronization errors with the music are your empirical evidence that ride operators speed things up to get people out of line faster.

Toybox and Daze
Those names sound familliar, but aren't ringing any bells. I'll have to check 'em out.

As for Aquas videos, there's a collection available in other parts of the world, but it won't work on our TVs. So, your only recourse, really, is to waste everyone's bandwidth downloading them from some p2p client or another. Or ask around - maybe someone's got 'em burnt to CD...

Go cheetah, get banana! Hey monkey, get funky!
I've been told Aqua was "Techno for Kids", but I don't think they really put much thought into a target market. They just had their own style, really. (and besides, most of their songs are blatantly inappropriate for children. A child singing "Candyman" is a walking invitation to pedophiles, and what's the message behind "Bumble Bees" again?)

But if someone had listened to this assessment, checked Aqua out, and decided those guys had missed an opportunity, they would have formed Toybox. They're squeaky clean, and custom-tailored to get lots of airplay on Radio Aahs (does that station still exist? I can't get the frequency it's supposed to be on here) or Radio Disney (which isn't nearly as good).

"Tarzan and Jane" has so much "Barbie Girl" to it, it's not even funny. It's in the melody, it's in the chord progression, it's in the back-and-forth narrative where a cultural icon is in love with their completely oblivious counterpart. But, as much as I want to be high-handed and take offense at this, I really like it.

Ordering their CDs now... =(
