self portrait (escher)

My car is haunted. That's all there is to it.

The alarm goes off now whenever I open the door. The horn honks, the headlights blink, and nothing I do can entice it to stop.

This started a half hour ago, when I pulled into a gas station to fuel up. It woke the attendant, but there fortunately weren't any houses for a full block or two.

So, it's 2:30am and my car horn won't stop honking. I can't go home, I can't call anyone for help. What do you do in a situation like that?

Lord only knows.

Lucky for me, I wasn't alone. Dave had enough mechanical knowledge to find and remove the appropriate fuse. No more horn. But the headlights are still blinking, even now.

I imagine the batteries will be drained by morning.

Now, here's the kicker: I took my car in to fix some battery problems a while back, and they ended up removing the alarm system. Seriously. They handed it to me. It's in a box somewhere.

To summarize:
Nothing triggered that alarm. Putting the key in ignition should have turned it off. Except it never should have turned on in the first place, because it wasn't physically within miles of my vehicle.

It's haunted.
