What's in a name?

The good folks over at kabalarians.com have offered some intriguing insight based my name. It's an interesting prospect - your name represents an abstraction of your self image, and it's something you've probably been faced with every day since birth. How could that not affect you? Well, let's see!

Your name has made you systematic and practical in all you do. You enjoy the feeling of accomplishment from working diligently at a task.

Fair enough...

Particular about your material possessions, you keep everything you own in a good state of repair, and you budget your personal finances very carefully.

Everything I own is in piles around me, waiting to be damaged underfoot or merely lost. As for my personal finances, I'm $2000 in debt to a credit card and $10,000 in debt to my parents. I can't say I'm happy about these things, so perhaps my name is trying to have it's influence despite me.

You are clever in mathematics and have great patience with work of a detailed nature, such as bookkeeping or accounting.

Mathematics? No.
Logic and quantitative thinking? Sure.
I suppose they're related. But I get numbers wrong more often than not. According to this, that's because I'm too clever. Mathematicians are so rigid about those things - if they could just see the genius of my calculations!

I do have great patience with work of a detailed nature, but that specifically excludes bookkeeping and accounting because of said number thing.

Systematic and practical in all you do, you enjoy the feeling of accomplishment from working diligently at a task.

That's practically all I live for these days.

You budget your personal finances very carefully. Particular about your material possessions, you keep everything you own in a good state of repair.

Didn't they already do that part?

This name limits imagination, flexibility, responsiveness, and spontaneity in your nature. It also limits your sense of humour and any real empathy of the problems of others.

Okay, I can accept the limited flexibility, responsiveness, and spontaneity. I'll even go for the limited empathy, since I come at that from the other direction. Those are all valid, if not completely accurate criticisms.

But my creativity and sense of humour are not lacking.

Them's fightin' words. Roughly equivalent to insulting a guy's manhood. (Displaced self esteem. What can I say?)

Those close to you do not appreciate that you may forget the thoughtful expressions of affection toward them.

Now, that's a bold statement. I would have gone with "might not appreciate" and tacked an "at first" onto the end. Those close to me have long since gotten used to that. Those who haven't are no longer close to me.

Your very practical nature does not allow you the appreciation you might have for life's more aesthetic values as it keeps your mind mostly concerned with facts and figures.

No, it's about evenly balanced.

The fact that the prescription on my glasses is about eight years out of date doesn't always allow me to appreciate aesthetics visually, but the world is a very pretty blur.

Weaknesses in the health could affect the intestinal tract with constipation and related difficulties such as rheumatism or arthritis.

Actually, we think my problems are more likely to be happy little Mexican parasites crawling around inside me, but we haven't completely ruled out Leukemia yet. So, HA! Shows what they know.

Now, contrast all that against this description of my astrological sign (from here).

Aquarius, the 11th sign of the zodiac, is a fixed air sign, and natives of this sign tend to possess both the friendly, engaging, sociable qualities of an air sign as well as the stubbornness and obstinance of a fixed sign. This often makes them original and entertaining individuals who have their own ways of thinking and doing things and are usually very reluctant to change their attitude, approach or behavior in order to conform. Aquarians will powerfully resist things they don't want to do. You have to accept the fact that you can never really make an Aquarian do anything. This is why Aquarians are commonly known as the most rebellious sign of the zodiac.

Aquarians often like to shock people and can enjoy stirring up a little trouble now and again. Find whatever direction the current is headed in, and you'll usually find Aquarius headed in the other. This can sometimes put them a bit out of step with social norms. But some smart, forward-looking Aquarians are able to benefit from their unique and unorthodox perspectives by putting themselves way out in front of the coming trends and riding the waves of social change before they hit most people's shores.

Because they tend to be rather future-oriented, Aquarians usually take an avid interest in computers, electronics, video games, and any other kind of high-tech gadgetry. Aquarians also tend to possess a somewhat unusual sense of humor and are often prone to a strong belief in conspiracy theories.

They don't really match, do they?

Must be a conspiracy.

Chosen name versus birth name
Here's Kurt:
The name of Kurt has given you an appreciation for many beautiful and refined aspects of life--music and art, literature, drama--and the outdoors, where you find much peace and relaxation, but it creates a far too sensitive nature.

Okay. If it weren't for my allergies, I'd like the outdoors. Other than that, I completely agree, although I think I'm getting better about being far too sensitive.

You sense and feel much that you do not understand, and sometimes you are alarmed at your thoughts and wonder about their origin. You rarely experience the tranquility that comes with stability of thinking or emotional control.

Oh yeah. That's me...

At times, you are very inspired, desiring to be with people and to entertain others as the "life of the party," while at other times you are aloof and choose to remove yourself entirely from association. You crave understanding and affection but your intensity of desire and your self-consciousness prevent you from finding the happiness you desire.

Again, pretty much right on the money...

You have suffered many disappointments and misunderstandings because of your inability to express your inner thoughts.

I don't know on that one. I think I'm pretty good at expressing my inner thoughts, although I've suffered many disappointments and misunderstandings. Maybe I'm not as good as I thought. You might be a better judge than I am...

You could experience sensitivity in the heart, lungs, or bronchial organs, causing tuberculosis, asthma, or depletion of your energies.

Well, I'm tired a lot, but that's mostly due to lack of sleep. Don't seem to have any particular heart/lung issues that I'm aware of...

And now, here's Dave (since that's the name I preferred before changing to Kurt):
The name of Dave creates a quick, analytical, and clever mind; you are creative, versatile, original, and independent.

Well...*blushes*, I like to think of that as being pretty accurate. I don't know about quick sometimes...I tend to think of myself as a little more methodical and slow in my thinking process.

You have large ambitions, and it is difficult for you to be tolerant and understanding of those who desire less in life or who are more slow and methodical by nature. Patience is not your forte.

Okay, I'll free admit, I'm very impatient with stupid people (my definition of stupid tends to get broader or narrow depending on my mood...). But, with people who are willing to learn and follow directions, I'm very patient.

You do, however, have leadership ability and would never be happy in a subservient position. You are ambitious and aggressive by nature. You would be happiest in positions where you are free to express individually and creatively and where opportunities are not restricted; you desire freedom, and do not tolerate being possessed by others.

Wouldn't mind being possessed every now and then... :) But, in a work position, I'd agree with this.

You appreciate change and travel, and the opportunity to meet and mix with others, and to influence them with your creative ideas. You are very self-confident and feel you can accomplish anything you set out to do, and you can, although this name does not allow proper completion of undertakings, and forced changes cause financial losses and bitter experiences.

Oh, man, that's me...Guess I really am DaveorKurt...

This name also creates caustic expression and moods which prevent harmony and happiness in close association. When under strain, tension could affect the stomach and solar plexus. There is a tendency for you to worry.

Again, this is pretty accurate. Stomach and solar plexus are my big problem areas for pain...

Well, I hit the maximum characters when I added David in here as well, so I'll add that as a seperate comment...

But wait, there's more!

Continuing my thought...
Here's David:
Your first name of David has given you a very practical, hard-working, systematic nature. Your interests are focused on technical, mechanical, and scientific things, to the exclusion of interests of an artistic, musical, or social nature.

Oops. This doesn't sound at all like me...This certainly sounds like what my parents want me to be, though...

You have a rather skeptical outlook on life and rather materialistic standards. In reaching your goals, you are very independent and resourceful, patient and determined.

Okay, I'm a little materialistic. I don't know how I am about reaching my goals...I still haven't reached one yet...

You can be so very positive and definite in your own ideas and opinions that others sense a lack of tact and friendliness in your manner of expression. You are inclined to be rather demanding and self-centred in your personal wants, and your own desires can be so overriding that you fail to recognize or appreciate the feelings, opinions, or desires of others.

This is another case where I may not be able to recognize my own faults, but I think I'm a very good listener, and don't think of myself as demanding and self-centered usually...

As a consequence, difficulties in relations within the family or with close associates can arise. Weaknesses in the health centre in the head, and in the stomach and intestinal organs.

Okay, this is pretty much right on, although I don't really have head problems, unless you consider my panic attacks. But, over all, I think Dave and Kurt were much closer to who I am than David.

Wonder if there's a listing for Kurrrrrrt.

The Evil guy from a comic Some Guy is writing
Your name of Matthew has created a most expressive nature, idealistic and inspirational, driven with a strong inner urge to be of service in some way that would uplift humanity as a whole. However, there is a tendency to assume too heavy a burden of responsibility for others, which leads to worry and undue concern. People with problems are drawn to you as they recognize you as one who has understanding and gives not only sympathy and comfort but provides also some constructive advice or assistance. You have a generous quality to your nature, but you must guard carefully against giving more than you receive or you will find yourself doing without because you have helped someone else. You love people, family, home, and friends and try to be a parent to the whole human race. While you have generally stable conditions in your personal life, you may experience some problems in business affairs through a tendency to be scattering and inattentive to details. Any health problems would show as tension in the nervous system brought on by worry.

Yeah, that pretty much nails me, I can't argue with any of it

Wait a sec...
That is pretty accurate. But where's the fun in accuracy? You omitted the name I know you by, so let's fix that now:

The first name of Matt creates an intense personal nature. Your feelings and emotional desires are strong and consequently you are an individual, determined, strong-willed person.

Right on so far.

Your creative nature and ambition drive you to pursue success to the extent that you jeopardize your personal well-being.

No, that would be me. =)

I think they're completely off base with that one, unless we go with a very liberal definition for "success." And "personal well-being."

There is a tendency for you to dominate others. You are too certain of yourself, and you are not open to the views of others or responsive to their desires or needs. Also, this name does not incorporate qualities that enable you to be diplomatic and to compromise.

Well, that's not flattering, is it?

There's some truth there, but the conclusions drawn are way too harsh and judgemental.

In all your work and activities you are inclined to be rather unsystematic and disorderly. These characteristics spoil stability, progress, and accumulation, even though you may put forth intense effort.

Can't say I've ever noticed sloppy workmanship. You do need constant reminders to work on a project, but the work you put out is impeccable.

Tension and frustration exact a heavy toll on your peace of mind and nervous system. You are often preoccupied with the desires and demands of the moment. Temper and indulgence could become serious problems in your life.

You do take things awful seriously. Road rage in particular is a problem, and you let your distaste for certain artistic styles turn into an irrational hatred for the artists behind them. In both cases, the recipients of your anger are not the intended target, but anyone in close proximity.

Your health could suffer through disorders affecting the nervous system. Tension centring in the head could affect the eyes, ears, sinuses, and teeth.

Actually, I kind of figured you were headed for a stroke. But that's logical too. =)

What an odd note to leave off on. Oh, well. At least your name doesn't hinder creativity!

Matt or Matthew
I decided to use Matthew because that's how I've been introducing myself for several years... if someone calls me Matt, I'll respond. But it's not how I think of myself.
