Why self doesn't own nice things:

Dry clean only? I laugh at your warning labels!

If it doesn't survive the washing machine, it's not worth owning.

There goes half my wardrobe
Most of it reads, dry-clean only or, wash cold and line dry.

More power to you.
It's good to take pride in things. Your wardrobe works for you, but I think it would work against me.

I just don't feel that kind of obligation to my wardrobe. To me, clothing is meant to be functional, and for some of my clothes to demand more maintenance than others seems to defy function.

"Nice" clothing costs more, both initially and in upkeep. It's not nearly as durable. It requires ironing - what's up with that? For all the extra attention, does it do anything different?

Not from where I'm standing.

So, I treat all my clothing the same. Let the warning labels make their demands - I'm not listening. Everything goes in the washing machine, and if it survives, I'll wear it again.

Re: More power to you.
It's not so much that it does anything special. In fact, I'd have never guessed that half of it had such special washing requirements. But the flip side of your argument is that I'd hate to deprive myself of a piece of clothing that I thought looked particularly good solely because of the washing requirements involved. Of course price sometimes factors in too, and then it gets a bit more muddled.

How did this turn into a lengthy discussion?
There's obviously a trade-off involved.

For me, the clothes would have to provide a level of warmth and comfort not otherwise available. For others, the effect on how you're percieved is enough. I'd rather be percieved as someone for whom such standards don't apply - the few business contacts who have judged my professionalism based on what I was wearing, I'd rather not work for.

And, like I said, sometimes things do survive the washing machine. Call it natural selection...
